Cauliflower is one of the veggies in the genus Brassica in the species Brassica Oieracea, in the Brassicaceae family. It is an annual plant produced by seeds. Only the head of the plant is eaten. The head is composed of inflorescence meristem. In the Middle ages, early form, it was associated with the island of Cyprus. The association continued in Western Europe, and it was extensive use as trade over there. In the 16th century, they were introduced to France, and in India, it came in 18922.

It comes in four colors like White, Green, Orange, and Purple. The white one is the most common. The orange one contains Beta-Carotene. The green one is sometimes called Broccoflower and available commercially in Europe and the US since the early 1990s. The purple one contains anthocyanins that give it that color; in the nutrition department, cauliflower scores high points. It is low in calories and a natural source of important minerals and vitamins like bone-building calcium and immune-supporting vitamin c. It is one of the most favorite among people who are in the process of weight loss as it is high in fiber and low in nutrition contain.

Classification of Cauliflower –

Asian – A tropical cauliflower used in India and China was during the 19th century developed in India.

Northwest European biennial – Used in Europe in early spring harvest and winter and developed in France during the 19th century.

Northern European annuals – Used in and Europe and North America for winter and summer harvest and in the 18th century was developed in Germany.

Italian – This is diverse in appearance and annual in type.

The side effects of cauliflower according to science-

One might be at reduced risk of developing certain cancers –

It contains an antioxidant called indole-3-carbinol which reduces the risks of developing reproductive cancers in both women and men. Another component found is sulforaphane which also reduces the risks of certain cancers.

The breakdown of the glucosinolate glucobrassicin produces Idole-3-carbinol. This can be found at a high level in cruciferous veggies like kale, collard green, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage, and broccoli. It is also available in the form of dietary supplements. Consumption of it might influence cancer incidence because it can alter estrogen metabolism and other cellular effects. In researches done on animals, it has been found that a daily dose of indole-3-carbinol reduces the risk of tumors.

Sulforaphane is a compound within the isothiocyanate group of organosulfur compounds. Its also found in cruciferous veggies. It helps in reducing cancer development by preventing enzymes that help in tumor and cancer growth. It also destroys cells that are already damaged. Sulforaphane is very effective in preventing prostate and colon cancer.

One may have reduced effects of blood-thinning medications –

Blood thinners are medicines that prevent blood clots and keep checks on existing blood clots not to become large. Clots in the heart, veins, and arteries can cause blockage, strokes, and heart attacks. People have blood thinners when they are affected with certain blood vessels or heart disease or an abnormal heart rhythm or heart valve replacement, or risks of blood clots after surgery.

Eating food that naturally contains vitamin K should be monitored by people taking blood-thinning medications to avoid unwanted interactions. When vitamin K is taken too much on an inconsistent schedule, then blood-thinning medicines do not work properly and can risk developing a dangerous blood clot. Cauliflowers contain this vitamin K.

One may experience hypothyroidism if they have an iodine deficiency –

Cauliflowers contain a slew of phytonutrients that have lots of health benefits. But one such phytonutrient produces a molecule called isothiocyanate. People with low dietary iodine intake can interfere with iodine absorption, especially if cauliflowers are eaten in large amounts. If people do not have iodine deficiency, then no risks are there.

Hypothyroidism is a common condition in which the thyroid does not create enough thyroid hormones into the bloodstream. This makes metabolism slow down. It can cause weight gain, feeling of tiredness, and unable to bear cold temperature. Iodine deficiency can lead to hypothyroidism.

When an entire head of cauliflower is eaten, one will have four times the recommended amount of vitamin C. Vitamin C is found in many foods and sold as a dietary supplement. It is a water-soluble vitamin. It helps in many enzymes functions and is important for immune system functions. It acts as an antioxidant that helps in fighting free radicals in the body. Vitamin C helps produce interferons, neuraminidase, and antibodies, the function of phagocytes, cellular immune response, helps in cytokine production by white blood cells, etc. All these lead to a strong immune system. So including cauliflower in a regular diet is a natural way of getting vitamin C.

One may get the proper benefits of fiber –

It is high in fiber which is good for overall health. There are three grams of fiber in one cup of cauliflower, which is 10% of daily needs. It is important because healthy bacteria in the gut are feed by fiber that promotes digestive health, and helps to reduce inflammation. If fiber is taken in the right condition, many digestive conditions can be prevented, like inflammatory bowel disease, diverticulitis, and constipation. Many kinds of research have shown that a diet rich in fiber like cauliflower lowers the risk of many illnesses, including diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. In obesity, prevention fiber plays a role.

It is high in choline which is an important nutrient which people have a deficiency. 45 mg of choline are there in one cup of choline, about 8% of adequate intake for men and 11% for women. It helps in supporting metabolism, synthesizing DNA, and maintaining the integrity of cell membranes. It also helps in brain development, the production of neurotransmitters which makes the nervous system healthy, and prevents cholesterol from gathering in the liver. It contains a plant compound called indole-3-carbinol, a source of plant estrogen, and helps in hormone balance by regulating estrogen levels.
