The new set of images of The Last of Us give a close-up look at the production of the series, likely concerning the first episode. It is the 1st TV series from Sony’s studio PlayStation Productions and is based on Naughty Dog’s award-winning video game series of the same name. Neil Druckmann, Naughty Dog’s co-president, is executive producing and co-writing the series with Craig Mazin. The 1st season consists of ten episodes and is made on an eight-figure budget. The series is expected to enhance and adapt the events of the 1st game and may lead into plot details from The Last of Us Part II.
The series takes place in a post-apocalyptic world severely damaged by infected and follows the jaded smuggler, Joel, responsible for escorting a teenage girl, Ellie, across the country. Previously, Game of Thrones alums Bell Ramsey and Pedro Pascal would be playing the characters. Joining them is Sarah, Gabriel Luna as Tommy, Nico Parker as Joel’s daughter, and Merle Dandridge playing the same role from the games as Marlene (the leader of a revolutionary militia, the Fireflies). Production for the series has started in Canada, Alberta, Calgary, and photos from the sets and casts can be seen online.
Photos of The Last of Us have surfaced online, shared on a Twitter account of a fan who visited the set. The videos and photos do not feature any actor. This appears to be the backdrop for an earlier episode; a street in Alberta is transformed into Austin, Texas, where the 1st The Last of Us game begins.
Joel is introduced as a single father in the series prologue living in Austin, Texas. The series opening has players experience escaping the initial outbreak with Joel, Tommy, Sarah (Joel’s daughter). The game cuts to Joel in a Boston quarantine zone twenty years later after the prologue.
Of the films and TV shows in the prologue, the series is one of the most expensive productions currently filming there. The shooting will not wrap up before June 2022, and there is no official announcement on the release date.
